As I hinted a couple weeks ago, I recently got back from a trip to Prince Edward Island for an "Anne Shirley pilgrimage".

I’ll confess: I didn’t even read Anne of Green Gables until a few months before this trip. And to be honest… I didn’t even like it. Anne was kind of obnoxious.

My connection to Anne is much more superficial but still nostalgic.

I was a homeschool kid who grew up watching the 1980s Sullivan Productions with Megan Follows. I still get full-body chills when the theme music plays!

I’d always dreamed of taking an Anne of Green Gables themed vacation. Not because of the books, but to walk through the world of the movies.

When my friend and I started planning our big 40th birthday trip, PEI came up and we realized this was our once-in-a-lifetime chance. Like me, she grew up on the movies and only recently read (and also didn’t love) the book. So we were in it for the same reasons. And coincidentally, the movie was also celebrating 40yrs!

When people think of an Anne of Green Gables vacation, PEI is the obvious choice. It’s where the story takes place, where the author L.M. Montgomery grew up, and where much of the scenery was filmed for the movies.

But we discovered that many of the actual filming locations weren’t on the island at all. They were actually in the Toronto area.

So we made an unconventional decision to spend two full days exploring film locations in Ontario before flying to PEI.

It was the best thing we could’ve done.

We got the best of both worlds: reliving our favorite movie scenes and experiencing the magic of the island.
